Examines the literary and intellectual history of Europe between 1500 and 1900, and how the European version of modernity spread across the world’s surface. The course covers the writers of the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, and the Romantic eras in the context of technological advancement, increasing secularization, and expanding imperialism.
