Biology Department and Major Mission Statement
The mission of the biology program is to provide a quality educational experience and to give students a broad knowledge and understanding of the biological sciences. Laboratory exercises, undergraduate research projects, and internships reinforce practical experiences, critical and analytical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills. The biology program supports the University mission by providing men and women with quality higher education according to the philosophy of Christian humanism as developed by Saint Francis de Sales. The biology program prepares students for academic and industrial employment opportunities, professional schools, and graduate schools.
Biology Major Student Learning Outcomes
Students who graduate from DeSales University with a major in biology will be able to demonstrate:
- basic knowledge of fundamental concepts in molecular, organismal, and population biology, and will have appropriate training to begin a successful career in the biological sciences;
- the ability to use published literature and current scientific databases to research biological topics;
- oral and written skills to clearly communicate concepts and technical information related to the biological sciences;
- proficiency in biological laboratory and field techniques through an understanding of the scientific method, experimental design, data collection and analyses, and the application of these tools for use in the real world.
- an understanding and appreciation for the ethical responsibilities of scientists in the execution and reporting of scientific studies.
Students who plan to attend medical, dental, or podiatric school should complete the B.S. Biology (Pre-Med/Pre-Dental Track).
Students who plan to attend veterinary school should complete the B.S. Biology (Pre-Vet Track).
Students who plan to attend Physician Assistant or graduate school should complete B.A. Biology (Pre-PA Track).
