Health Information Technology is one of the fastest growing niche fields for nurses across the US. The MSN in Nursing Informatics with Certification in Healthcare Information Management is established in response to the expected protracted demand for these specialists. The concurrent development of an expertise in information science and in the nursing sciences affords the individual a theoretical understanding of nursing as both a scientific and practice discipline. Students will concomitantly receive post-Master’s certification in Healthcare Information Management through completion of six courses offered in the Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) program as part of this specialty concentration. The ultimate synthesis of these knowledge bases produces a graduate who can not only assume a health information management role but also can impact the intersection of biomedical science, information sciences, management, and clinical nursing.
Courses toward the dual MSN/MSIS degree are offered through both the School of Nursing and the Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) programs. Students who are registered for the dual degree must complete all requirements for both degree programs before the dual degree is awarded. If a student desires to complete a single degree after matriculation into the dual degree, then the student is required to petition both program directors and request reclassification as a single degree student.
Graduates of the MSN in Nursing Informatics with Certification in Information Systems program will be prepared for positions that include:
- Bioinformatics
- Clinical decision support systems
- Mobile health applications
- Nurse Informaticist
