The Mathematics Program

All degree candidates are required to complete the eleven core courses:

MA - 121 Calculus I: MOT/Mathematics Credits: 3
MA - 122 Calculus II Credits: 3
MA - 223 Calculus III Credits: 3
MA - 224 Calculus IV Credits: 3
MA - 231 Discrete Mathematics Credits: 3
MA - 243 Differential Equations Credits: 3
MA - 301 Probability Theory Credits: 3
MA - 331 Linear Algebra Credits: 3
MA - 453 Senior Coordinating Seminar Credits: 3
CS - 121 Introduction to Computer Programming Credits: 3
PH - 201 General Physics I: Mechanics and Heat Credits: 5
OR
PH - 211 General Physics I: Mechanics and Heat (no Lab) Credits: 4

One of the following:

MA - 445 Advanced Calculus Credits: 3
MA - 471 Abstract Algebra Credits: 3

Four elective courses selected from the following:

CS - 122 Object-Oriented Programming Credits: 3
MA - 260 History of Mathematics Credits: 3
any mathematics courses at the 300 and 400 levels

Required Courses

Actuarial science is the application of mathematics and statistics to the study of risk management. This program track in the mathematics major is designed to prepare students for the first two exams offered by the Society of Actuaries/ Casualty Actuarial Society. In addition to the eleven core courses in the mathematics major listed above, degree candidates in this program track are required to complete one of the following:

MA - 445 Advanced Calculus Credits: 3
MA - 471 Abstract Algebra Credits: 3

The following three courses:

MA - 311 Actuarial Mathematics - P Credits: 3
MA - 312 Actuarial Mathematics - FM Credits: 3
EC - 209 Principles of Macroeconomics: MOT/ Social Science Credits: 3
OR
EC - 210 Principles of Microeconomics Credits: 3

One additional mathematics course at the 300 or 400 level

MA - 399 Mathematics Internship Credits: 3 (recommended when possible)
