Students who graduate from DeSales University with a major in TV/film will be able to:
- demonstrate fundamental knowledge of film history, theory and literature;
- demonstrate fundamental knowledge of and skills in film production (camera operation, lighting and sound, screenwriting, computer technologies, directing, acting, editing/ duplication);
- demonstrate fundamental knowledge of and skills in film analysis and criticism;
- model professional values and behaviors of the field (deadline adherence, effective communication, collaboration, etc.)
The DeSales TV/Film Department is the premier film school of the Lehigh Valley. With a concentrated emphasis on single-camera narrative and documentary production, the program of study is conceived as a multi-layered experience blending technical and creative instruction with ethical and professional standards.
Learning fundamental skills in writing, cinematography, directing, producing, editing/post, and studio production, with access to professional-grade, state-of-the-art HD cameras and editing systems from their first semester, TV/Film majors are prepared for work in virtually all areas of the media industry - primarily television and film production.
Mixing practical application and theory, TV/Film students create a body of work that spans all genres: short films, television pilots, music videos, news and sports programming, educational media, commercials, and public service promos. Films created by TV/Film students at DeSales have been screened and earned awards at leading film festivals regionally, nationally, and internationally. Believing in the power of experiential learning, opportunities for internships and international study are strongly encouraged and supported. The department boasts alumni who have garnered 29 Emmy Award nominations and 19 wins.
Because all forms of mass media powerfully affect the quality of life in the world, the TV/Film Department emphasizes the development of an ethical point of view. The goal is to graduate thinking media-makers who will, in the spirit of the University’s Salesian mission, go on to “enrich the human community and enhance the dignity of the individual.”
Admission into the TV/Film major is twofold. The applicant must be accepted by the University and must successfully audition and/or interview separately for the major.
